Keratometer – Overview
A keratometer is an ophthalmic instrument used to measure the radius of curvature and refractive power of the anterior surface of the cornea. By measuring the corneal curvature, ophthalmologists and optometrists can understand the shape and degree of curvature of the cornea, providing important information for the diagnosis and treatment of various eye diseases and the fitting of appropriate glasses or contact lenses.

Working Principle
Keratometers usually work based on optical principles. They emit specific light patterns that are projected onto the corneal surface and then reflected back. The instrument calculates the radius of curvature and refractive power of the cornea by measuring the angle and position of the reflected light using mathematical formulas. Common keratometers use light patterns such as the Placido disk. By analyzing the image of the Placido disk reflected on the corneal surface, relevant data on corneal curvature can be obtained.
临床应用

- Diagnosis of eye diseases: Abnormal changes in corneal curvature may be signs of certain eye diseases, such as keratoconus and corneal astigmatism. By regularly measuring corneal curvature, doctors can monitor the development of these diseases and formulate corresponding treatment plans.
- Evaluation of refractive surgery: Before performing refractive surgery (such as laser myopia surgery), doctors need to have a detailed understanding of the patient’s corneal curvature to determine the feasibility of the surgery and predict the surgical outcome.

Development and Technological Progress

Modern keratometers not only have higher measurement accuracy and speed but can also be integrated with other ophthalmic equipment (such as corneal topographers and tonometers) to achieve more comprehensive eye examinations and data management. In addition, some new – type keratometers have adopted non – contact measurement techniques, which reduce the patient’s discomfort during the examination and improve the convenience and accuracy of the examination.
